Astrid let out that annoying tinkle of a laugh. It set my teeth on edge. She said, “Of course you’re busy. Busy protecting the citizens of Brimstone. You’ll have to do that without Luca now, I’m afraid. He’s been called away, and I don’t know when he’ll be back.”

Fear trickled down my back. “What have you done to him?”

Astrid lifted her hand and examined her nails. “Done to him? I haven’t done anything. He’s under the impression that his father is severely ill and that he needs to be at his side immediately. His father lives far away and it’ll take Luca a long time to get there.” She lowered her hand and smiled at me. “Now that Luca is out of the way, I’m next in line as the leader of the guardians. If there are any justice issues in the future, you’ll have to deal with me now. Not that I need your help, witch.”

Stanley hissed and snapped, “Don’t talk to my Cassia like that! You won’t be doing any work in this town. We know it was you who impersonated Cassia! We’re going to tell Blythe and she’ll arrest you!”

Astrid bent down and looked at Stanley. “You deluded, scruffy furball. You don’t have any proof of that. Luca can’t confirm what he overheard as he isn’t here. And, like I said, I don’t know when he’s coming back. I’ll deny any accusations you make against me. You won’t find any proof of what I did because there isn’t any proof.”

Stanley gave her a long look before moving closer to me. Astrid laughed and straightened up.

I said, “Why are you doing this to us? What have we done wrong to you?”

She looked me up and down. “I don’t like you. It’s that simple. I don’t like how you swan around this town thinking you’re better than anyone else. I don’t like how you look at my boyfriend with longing in your eyes. I don’t like how friendly he is with you. Everything was going well with Luca and me until you arrived. I’ve been watching how you’ve been working together recently. You’re getting too close. That’s one of the benefits of being able to shift into a small animal. I’ve been watching every move you’ve made.”

Stanley said angrily, “We knew someone had been following us. Why can’t you leave us alone?”

Astrid shook her head. “I won’t rest until I’ve got rid of you, Cassia Winter. Brimstone will be better off without you. And you too, furball. Have a nice day. I’m sure we’ll run into each other soon.”

Astrid laughed once more for good measure and then sauntered away.

Stanley said, “What are we going to do about her? Are you going to tell Blythe and Esther about her?”

I shook my head. “I don’t have any proof of what she did. Yet. And I don’t want to burden them with my problems. They’ve got enough to worry about.” A calmness descended over me and I knew I was no longer afraid of Astrid. “I’ll deal with Astrid in good time and in the proper way. But for now, I’m not going to give her a second thought.” I picked Stanley up and pulled him close. “Let’s go and see Gran and Blythe. I’ve missed them.”

Stanley nodded. “Will we come back to Brimstone soon? I feel like the town needs us.”

“Yes, we’ll be back. Very soon. I’m a justice witch, and threats from Astrid won’t stop me from doing my job.”

  Stanley nodded. “Me neither.”
